Finding Your Inner Compass: How Psychologists Can Guide Us Through Life's Storms
I first became aware of the philosopher Seneca in my high school Ancient History studies. I recall he was a tutor and advisor to Emperor Nero, able to moderate through wise counsel the infamous Roman ruler’s brutal tendencies.
We all need a ‘Seneca’ to guide us from time-to-time. Knowing which port to set sail for is to be confident in ourselves, comfortable with our preferences, and certain in our beliefs and values. We can develop our sense of where we need to go in life based on these factors. We decide what direction to take and understand how long it may take to get there. However, it is not unusual for unfavourable or unexpected circumstances to sometimes steer us off course, frustrating our proper purpose and satisfaction in life.
Like Seneca, psychologists can help us decipher the unique map of ourselves and our lives. They may be the compass that provides clarity during storms and assist us to navigate the unfamiliar winds and waves that may challenge us and rock our boats. They are in the boat with us, and can help us figure out the correct course to our intended port and be there when we decide to change our minds.
